Learn the foundations of safe, enjoyable backpacking on a multi-day coastal trip on Vancouver Island, and hopefully make some new outdoor friends for future adventures!
Our Introduction to Backpacking course is designed for women who want to step into the outdoors with support, practical knowledge, and a welcoming community.

What will we learn?
By the end of this course, you’ll have practical skills, real experience, and the confidence to begin planning your own backpacking adventures.
Before we hit the trail
- What to pack and why including:
- An easy to follow packing list
- How to choose gear that works for you
- Access to coaching
- Food packing
- Planning simple, nourishing backcountry meals
- Menus for multiple budgets
- How to prepare your body with realistic fitness guidance
On the Trip We’ll
- Set up camp and learn how to use a tent comfortably
- Safely treat drinking water
- Get comfortable lighting and cooking with backpacking stoves
- Practice staying comfortable in changing weather
- Learn about basic coastal navigation and trail awareness
- Group hiking practices and outdoor etiquette
- Outdoor hygiene solutions
- Learn to travel responsibly in nature
- Learn the rhythms of backpacking at a supportive pace
Is this a good course for me?

- I’ve hiked by myself but want to connect with some other women in my area.
Backpacking is not for the faint of heart, you’ll need a good base level of fitness, some comfort with dirt and a willingness to try new things!

Our goal is for you to leave with skills you can use on future trips with other hikers!
Fitness Considerations
For women seeking adventure and personal growth, should be comfortable walking 5 km with a 30 pound pack, able to do 10 weighted step-ups.
Should also be comfortable crawling and moving from the ground to a standing position several times in a row.
